Spanish

At Calder Primary pupils learn the Modern Foreign Language of Spanish. Modern Foreign Languages are part of the National Curriculum from Key Stage 2 onwards, however we begin from Reception to set the foundations to pupils having a love of language learning. 

By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for pupils to be language learners who are passionate, resilient and independent. They are confident speakers of Spanish who have a strong awareness of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and have a sound understanding of Spanish grammar. They should be inquisitive, proud linguists; able to progress readily to the next stage of their language learning at Key Stage 3. 

Spanish is taught for 20 minutes in EYFS, 45 minutes in KS1 and 1 hour in KS2 every week. It is taught by specialist MFL teachers at The Calder Learning Trust and the programme of study is a 2 year rolling programme to embed and recap key knowledge and skills and build on these in each class. Lessons include a variety of songs, games, practical tasks and written work. 

Spanish learning is celebrated in our Golden Book Assembly each week, with the Spanish Stars of the Week. 

The aims of Spanish lessons are that pupils: 

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
